whyyyyy does the popup not work :(

since posting here worked out so well last time, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG

on my neocities site (mottemotte.neocities.org) i wanted to start out with an image of a house, the front door of the house would link to elsewhere, and the mailbox would open up a box of text.

got the front door done, i can link the mailbox to elsewhere as well, but WHYYY does the text not POP up!!!! you can click the mailbox and it does nothing, and the text just sits there like a stupid generic line of text. disgraceful

i copied the code from here until i could figure it out well enough to properly screw around with it, but even just copy/pasted it wont work!!! i dont have my button to open the popup as a <div> though, mine is <area> so it works only when you click on the mailbox, but it still wont do anything!!
