first you will need a DAW of course (digital audio workstation/music program) a lot of people use garageband since it's very accessible
tinker around with it until you feel comfortable, and maybe search online for some stems from bands you like. "stems" are basically one song split up into separate tracks, so the drums will be on one audio file and the lyrics on another, for example. these are usually used for remixes but hearing the isolated tracks in your DAW can help you figure out how to get to the kind of sound you want.
there's also some free resources you can do anything with, musicradar has over 40,000 free samples of a bunch of different instruments and genres
most importantly never give up!!! musicians get "writer's block" too!
