what fabrics to make patches from?

so i have this jean jacket i wanna spice up with some DIY patches, but the problem is that i've never done this type of thing before and i don't know what fabrics would be good for that. i have this old pair of sweatpants that's falling apart and some old t-shirts that i could cut up, but both of these fabrics are kinda stretchy and i don't know if that would work. is there anyone more experienced with DIY here that could give me some advice? i'd really appreciate it :)

in my experience stiffer fabric works best, stretchy is kinda shit :// I recommend getting some non stretch cotton, it's quite cheap

alternatively if you still have COVID masks, the single use ones work surprisingly well, I've made a few patches from them. black ones are obviously better but you can paint the blue/white ones. i wouldn't really use those on like trousers, but on bags or jackets they can work really well
