Is there any way to more easily return to a topic that I didn't start besides bookmarking in my browser? If someone responds to me in the comments I don't want to just leave them hanging :/

I don't think so. Been checking back manually, which is easy to forget. Most people never seem to continue a conversation anyway.

Conversation death on here might be a little bit of a chicken and the egg scenario. Are notifications pointless because no one holds a conversation or does no one hold a conversation because there's no way to keep track of threads?
it'd be a nice feature, but imo spacehey probably isn't likely to get a lot of new features any time soon.
