In your opinion, is it the music someone listens to, the way they dress, or who they associate with that makes them a part of a scene? Is it a lifestyle or a fashion choice? Genuinely curious what people think.
The biggest two factors are the music and political ideologies. you don't belong in any alternative subcultures if you're racist, homophobic, etc. or if you don't listen to the music associated with it. Fashion is not a deciding factor and is mostly used for self-expression from those in the scene. It's a lifestyle, not just a fashion trend.
For punk, it's mostly political values, for goth it's mainly music, but also how you present yourself (though I've been a goth for a while and I don't dress like it) and for emo it's also just music. There's this belief that goth or new wave has a political stem, when it was made as an offshoot of the apolitical side of postpunk.
music and political ideologies, at least for punk.
for emo, from what ive heard its mostly music, and for goth it tends to be "just listen to the music" with a hint of appearance hidden in there LOL
also someone with shitty ideologies probably isnt gonna fit into any alternative subculture very well regardless of how much bauhaus they listen to LMAO
