removing the smell of other peoples' detergent when you have shared laundry facilities

Forum: Helping each other

i wasn't really sure what forum this would fit best in so if someone wants to point me to a different forum where i might get better replies feel free. anyway i have an extremely sensitive nose and i can't stand artificial smells/perfumes, they make me nauseous and my eyes water even if it's a "good" smell. laundry detergent in particular is a problem since it's on my clothes and i can smell it all day, so i use unscented laundry detergent, specifically arm & hammer brand.

at my apartment there are shared washers and dryers (two of each) and if the last person who used the washing machine used too much detergent, i can smell their detergent on my clothes, which i feel like would be gross to many people even if you don't have the same smell sensitivity i do lol? the machines are coin-operated so running an empty cycle or washing my clothes again isn't really an option. is there something i can add to my laundry to help remove the smell of others' detergent without damaging my clothes? any suggestions?

First off, props to you for using unscented laundry detergent like Arm & Hammer! That's a great start. But when the shared washing machines at your apartment complex have too much detergent residue left behind, it can be super frustrating.

One suggestion is to try adding some vinegar to your rinse cycle. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and can help remove any lingering detergent smells from your clothes without damaging them. Just add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle and you should notice a difference.

Another option is to use a laundry booster like Borax. Borax is a natural mineral that can help remove odors and stains from clothes. Just add half a cup of Borax to your laundry along with your unscented detergent and you should be good to go.

I hope these tips help you out.
