Being a musician in [current year]

Forum: Music

Hey all, thought i'd make a thread about the trials and tribulations of trying to live as a musician in 202x. It can get really frustrating when your passions aren't very valued and you have to learn to market them. (Even outside of music)
For those of you that have played in bands, what was your experience like?
If you're not able to live off of your craft, how do you accept that?
Additionally, what ways do you find support?

Curious to hear your stories :)

It is hard but that's the life of an artist.

the best thing you can do is either move to somewhere that is more art and music focused for ex: my band is located in SATX but the area is more known for punk and isn't really a place for indie music, so if I want to be more noticed I would need to play shows in ATX (which is 2 hours away) or either move their which isn't cheap.

another thing you can do is be signed to a small tape/record label, even if it's only 3-4 bands in the label it does help and the label can more easily get you shows to play.

Hope this info helps you tho.

Location definitely seems pretty important, since playing shows seems to be the only way to bring in revenue if you're not a major artist. Our town was a former major music venue, but has since fallen from grace. (Good old days, huh?) I've seen a lot of conflicted discourse on the label issue in 2023, especially among smaller musicians. There are a lot of people who say that it's not really necessary in terms of promotion and that the cut it takes from your revenue can hurt making a living off of it, but at the same time I think its preferable than the minimal attention one would get trying to release music and play shows in today's over saturated music world.

I'll check out your band too :)
