Starting a Garden

howdy, this year i wanted to take a shot at gardening, I've been doing sum research and even found a place to plant, its a empty spot in the middle of the woods behind my home, I've never gardened before but hopefully it wont go horribly. So if you have any tips for me that would be super helpful, btw i live in the Midwest so its still kind of cold here (would it be bad to plant the seeds now?)
