Poem I Wrote For School. (TW for dark themes.)

Lament of a Sunderland

3 years.

3 years after the letter.
Returning to our special place,
looking for you and your open arms.
Soon, the fog comes in, and I am reminded of my sins.
Female faces wrapped in gauze,
a man with a mask and mannequins,
2 women, a boy, and a girl.
Hospitals and nightclubs… Mary, I’ll see you soon.
Finally reaching the hotel, a VHS is waiting on the bed… Is it finally time?
Putting the video in, my eyes widened at the sight. It's what happened that fateful night.
You told me that you felt ugly, almost like a monster.
But I told you that you still were beautiful. Was it a lie? Perhaps so.
Then, I suddenly remembered the smell of cotton and old lace, as I saw the pillow go over your face.
Hearing your muffled cries of agony and you calling my name…
That’s why you called me here. Mary, I’ll see you soon.
You’ve changed, my love. You’ve… Become the monster you thought you were. And so have I.
Getting into my car, putting your cold body in the backseat, I go to the lake. Mary, I’ll see you soon.
Closing my eyes, and pressing the gas, I dive in headfirst.
The water’s cold. But so are you now.
Feeling the world get dark, this will be my fate… In the water.

Mary,
I’ll
See
You
Soon.

With love, James.
