Need some explaining

Is is just me, or did something shift in music production after the 2010's? I'm not gonna act like I know a lot about the subject, I'm simply going by feel

Soooo, I was listening to some Pop and R&B, and this is something I keep noticing again and again, the difference in the bass (I think) is like, rly confusing 

I was listening to stuff from Cassie, Destiny's Child, Britney, TLC, Blaque, and so on, and I started wondering, how is it that as time went on, music became more, like, flat?? When I listen to more recent releases, it feels quieter, doesn't really have that "oomf"

It still sounds nice, a lot of new things did happen since everything started going digital, but still.. How did this even happen? Now if I want to listen to bassy stuff, I have to go into genres that are a bit more niche, (which is still cool, don't get me wrong) or just stick with the 2000's

How does bass even work? Like, how did they make it soo good and catchy? Dunno, but I would like to find out
