Rorochan_1999 Streaming Incident

Well, to kick off the group, I'll be posting my write-up on an incident that is not very well known about, but that I have been carefully following for some years now.

What is it?

Rorochan_1999 was the streaming username of a 14-year-old Japanese girl who after a series of online antics would go on to commit suicide on the night of November 24, 2013. I will try to summarize the major parts, but this is a DEEP rabbit hole. There are a lot of details that I will not be covering for the sake of brevity, but I will put some resources at the end that I encourage you to check out if further interested :)

Screencap from one of her streams

Beginning sometime in 2012, a user by the name of rorochan_1999 would begin streaming on 2 Japanese streaming sites, Niconico and FC2. For the most part, these streams are what is to be expected from a 13-14-year-old girl, singing, dancing, and generally just vlogging. Her streams were mostly anonymous in that she would go out of her way to hide her face (like pictured above), but on multiple occasions did slip up, and reveal her face. Where the oddities would begin is that she would title these streams in explicit ways, an example being, "Erotic Menhera Virgin, 3rd year of junior high school" (Menhera being a Japanese term to describe a girl with a mental illness).

The nature of these explicit stream titles would attract particular characters to her streams. Her actions in these streams could be considered attention-seeking in that she would stand on the edge of her apartment building, run across traffic, and rile up the viewers who would flood her streams with malicious and sexual comments.

On November 24th, 2013, she would start her final stream. After waiting for her stream to become populated, she would walk to the balcony of her 13th-story apartment and explain that she would become a "legend" if she were to jump off her balcony. While her stream would receive some comments to not do it, the majority of her viewers would encourage her to take the leap. She would then get on the ledge and take the leap, falling to her death.

The Aftermath

Following the 2013 incident, her final stream was lost and all that was left was a GIF of her tragic fall. It would remain like this until 7 years later on September 14th, 2020 when a full version of her stream with audio was found. She would jump at 3:42 AM and her body would be found at 3:55 AM when a newspaper delivery person would come across her.

Due to the nature of her age, rorochan_1999's name was never actually figured out. The nature of her death remains largely a mystery, as she was not suspected of being bullied or abused.

To touch on some final things, there was a music video posted in 2020 by a Japanese band named Shinsei Kamattechan, the song is titled "Ruru's Suicide Show on a Livestream Official Video". This was widely believed to be a reference to this tragedy, but besides the similar name, and similar subject matter of the song title, these 2 have no correlation.

Other than that I will be leaving a couple of links I think are of note, and if anybody has any questions or wants to start a discussion feel free to reply.

HER FINAL DEATH STREAM (It is not graphic in the picture as the video is quite grainy, but of course definitely be careful if this is a sensitive subject matter for you): https://youtu.be/XF1e7xLR-Ew
