recently ive been thinking people share waaaay too much out here now. i mean every few videos i see people sharing a little too much about their intamate relationships, videos of someones pets throwing up immedietly after eating, and a lot more stuff that i just think shouldnt be posted completely publically for everyone. these things i think people are completely ok to share to a small group of people, but im talking about the people who share this information for everyone. digital footprint, depite what it may sound like, is a VERY real thing. the things that are posted are on the internest stuck just in the algorithm forever. this can be used against you if dug far enough down for. people DO looks at your social medias for jobs, it dosent seem signifigant to us now that social media is literally just seen as an everyday note taking thing, but its not. this is why we had journals, can we bring that back? i may get hate for this but its my opinion.

i totally agree with this. i tend not to post anything too personal unless its a private account since it is quite literally shown to everyone and posted on peoples feed. sure for shits and giggles its kinda funny but then again even people you know or meet might find the video and know its you. idk i kinda just feel like your personal life should only be shared with people closest to you.

I agree with this, one of the other socials i use is called hubzilla. Now i'm going to give a basic rundown of terminology. You can find all the information i'm using here
you have
- channels
- profiles
What are channels?
Channels aresimply collections of content stored in one place. A channel can
represent anything. It could represent you, a website, a forum, photo
albums, anything. For most people, their first channel with be "Me".
The most important features for a channel that represents "me" are:
- Secure and private "spam free" communications
- Identity and "single-signon" across the entire network
- Privacy controls and permissions which extend to the entire network
- Directory services (like a phone book)
Multiple Profiles
Any number of
profiles may be created containing different information and these may
be made visible to certain of your connections/friends. A "default"
profile can be seen by anybody and may contain limited information, with
more information available to select groups or people. This means that
the profile (and site content) your beer-drinking buddies see may be
different than what your co-workers see, and also completely different
from what is visible to the general public.
Now that we have that out of the way this is how social media should be done. I can have a channel I send everyone i know irl to. Colleagues, friends, my wife, my children, extended family, the stranger at the gym, ect. I then create multiple profiles. work, friends, close friends, inner family, outer family, and acquaintances. I can have my profile share more details with my family than my colleagues. (religious status, likes/dislikes, even my marital status) where as my family and friends would have access to those in a separate profile, i can also have a different profile picture for my different profiles. A public profile photo that isn't related to me at all, a professional looking profile picture, and maybe a picture of me and my wife as my private one. I can have a separate channel (without needing to create a new account) for my gaming friends. (streamers could also benefit from this too) I'm honestly dissappointed more social media sites don't use this.

i think so yeah, when I was a kid i just lied about everything (age job etc) and i've seen kids just spewing their truth out into the web like no tomorrow! or how groups of people feel inclined to know personal things about you (like face or voice) when you don't owe those strangers anything. I've seen it especially with content creators, like para social relationships have been a thing but it's jarring to see on a daily basis.

I totally agree. People overshare then are shocked when there's consequences. Tiktok is the worst about it. I've deleted mine, but I remember seeing people doing things that cause them to lose jobs then wonder why they cant get hired again. Whether we like it or not workplaces will look you up on social media. We can't control that. So I find it best to limit what you post. Sorry I totally went off on a tangent, but I think you get what I mean.

yes and no. people have always overshared on the internet, but its a lot more easier nowadays. cause how easily you can pick up your phone, record, and post all within 1 minute. so the oversharing is a bit more intimate in a way. sometimes its harmless (like your cat falling off the counter), and sometimes its sharing your address, job, and other people without their permission

absolutely people share too much about their personal lives and most importantly their children
family vlog channels are so weird to me posting about your children's lives to millions of strangers
on the internet is not ok and just putting your children in danger and exposing them to a bunch of
creeps

One thing specific that not only annoys me, but concerns me is how people are so loose with their real names and schools or workplaces, where they live, single or married, what car they drive.

i think people overshare just as much online as ever, its just that nowadays people are less anonymous with their sharing. Also the fact that since so many people are online earlier, from a younger age they are less aware of internet safety AND there's more people out there for this stuff to get shared too.
TL;DR
- less anonyminity
- younger people online
- more people online
