Thoughts on the PSP?

As the day I move out of home comes closer and closer, I've been considering what I'm going to do about gaming since I won't be able to bring the gaming computer with me and I don't really want the hassle of getting a TV compatible with my PS2.

I figure the most convenient option is a portable console, and I'm looking at the PSP-1000 (original) because its homebrew compatibility looks interesting to me and also I like free online stuff.

I've never owned one though, and I'd like to hear from the people who have.
